Teaching considerations
This piece is a great introduction to legato, staccato, and marcato styles. The technical demands are limited which allow great focus to be placed on teaching other elements. The opening "air" section utilized two sub-phrases within the four-bar phrase, making this a great opportunity to teaching the concept of long phrases. The flute part has an echo phrase that last just three measures. Intonation, balance, blend, and phrasing are all areas to work on in the first section of the piece.
The following "dance" section is in 2/4 time and uses four staccato eighth notes followed by two long quarter notes., perfect for work on the contrasting note lengths. The clarinets play in octaves with the clarinet 1 part above the break. The clarinet 2 parts stays below the break through the piece.
