about the project
This website was created by Tim Vande Griend in partial fulfillment of the Masters of Music in Conducting degree from the American Band College of Sam Houston State University. Upon entering the program, one of the areas Mr. Vande Griend needed to improve on was his knowledge of concert band literature. This project (and others) are part of ABC's method of helping Mr. Vande Griend improve his skills as a band director so that he can better serve
his students, families, school, and community.

The Inspiration For This Project
In some band programs, young students perform music that has little aesthetic value and contains limited educational opportunity. Some directors are simply unaware of much of the quality literature that exists, and their choices for concert music are driven by certain publishers' recommendations (which can be "hit or miss" regarding quality). Others base their choice of music on what they think will make their students have fun in band class or what they think the audience will enjoy most. Education needs to be the priority in the band classroom. Quality music provides the best opportunities for learning, and it's incredibly fun and rewarding to play!
